In order to complete the MYP curriculum, M5s have to carry out a Personal Project in which they have the possibility to organise a project that they are personally interested in. They’re able to apply the skills they’ve learned throughout their MYP years and solve a global problem under one of the following global contexts:
- Identities and relationships
- Orientation in space and time
- Personal and cultural expression
- Scientific and technical innovation
- Globalization and sustainability
- Fairness and development
The following M5 students have shared their project ideas and the reason behind their interest in that specific area.
Muhammad Hakeemy: “I’ve been learning how to create my own clothing brand. The purpose of this was to create a movement for athletes in the process of reaching their dreams but are being “overlooked.” Their hard work remains under the radar. I chose the global context personal and cultural expression as I am communicating personal creative ideas through an aesthetic aspect of clothing. The biggest challenge has been seeing the project actually through. It was a hard learning curve and often there would be moments of self-doubt. The hardest thing was persevering.”
Auni Rosdi: “For my personal project this year, I decided to discover more about the beauty within my heritage through my passion for cooking. After being quarantined in Malaysia for over 5 months with my grandparents and seeing my grandma cook various types of Malaysian traditional dishes, I was interested in learning how to cook them. From there I would like to share my cooking with frontliners (frontline workers) and some family members. I will be cooking a two course meal from 3 different ethnicities (Malay, Chinese and Indian) for 40 frontliners. [On] December 11 2020 I managed to serve a two course Malay breakfast meal for the frontliners, ‘nasi lemak’ as the main course and ‘kuih bakar’ as a dessert. One of the biggest challenges I’ve faced is cooking for a big group of people. I find it a bit difficult to guess the portion for each serving and the amount I need to cook. I also had my grandma, my mom and two of my aunts come help me pack the food into each box.”
Angelina Gerlich: “My personal project is about alcohol use in young athletes, and for my action I am designing and creating an informative and interactive website to inform people about the problem. My chosen global context for the project is ‘Identities and Relationships.’ One challenge I have faced so far is that, because of the current pandemic situation, it is much more difficult to interview people, and it has been harder to get in touch with the people I want to interview.”

Eileen Barry: “For my personal project (PP), I have decided to write an original screenplay based on the concept/idea of how far one would go to achieve perfection. I have chosen the global context of “personal and cultural expression.” I’ve chosen to do this project because I have always wanted to write an original screenplay, but never been able to get past around ten pages, and this was a great opportunity to fulfil my dream and be supported. The challenges that I have faced so far have been the time limit of PP, as well as coming up with creative, and original ideas that fit well, and aid my story.”
Celine Esper: “My goal is to create promotional videos to advertise clubs and after school activities at TISA to therefore inform students about the clubs and hopefully increase the number of students joining while I improve and develop my video editing skills. Video editing is one of my passions so this is a reason why I am doing this project, to improve my editing skills meanwhile benefiting the TISA community. This links to my global context really well: Personal and Cultural Expression.”
